Conservation of a part of Kouros from the sea room of Monemvasia
It is about a piece of marble, with high porosity that bears depositions from the sea to a small extent.
The conservation procedure included desalination, mechanical cleaning, drying and documentation of the procedure. The sculpture's surface was covered by salt crust. Their removal was completed entirely mechanically. Scalpels and soft brushes were used.
For the desalination procedure, the method of static immersion was chosen. This is the most time consuming stage of conservation. The find is immersed in successive baths of seawater -water from the water supply system- deionized water. The transition from one stage to the other is realized according to the conductivity measurement. The desalination is considered complete, when the conductivity values are close to the conductivity value of the water of mains water supply. The drying of the object was assisted by solution of ethyl alcohol and deionized 1:1 and finally by solution of ethyl alcohol.
Upon completion of the conservation procedure, its scientific exploitation, namely the collection of information, the study, the promotion, the exhibition to the public, is feasible.
