The goal of the programme is to research, to develop and to implement innovative methods for the in situ protection and preservation of wooden wrecks in environments of high biorisk, like that of the Mediterranean and to propose solutions for marine environments of low and high hydrodynamic.
In environments of low hydrodynamic, the programme aims to study the use of geotextiles and to note their effectiveness as natural barriers and their capability to create anaerobic burrial environments.
In environments of high hydrodynamic it targets to explore an innovative approach that includes the boxing of the wooden part of the wrecks in the sediment.
The programme includes the following:
1) Evaluation of the use of geotextile for the in situ protection of wooden wrecks
2) Underwater excavation, archaeological documentation and protection of the post-byzantine wreck of Zakynthos.
3) Determination of the risk of the pelagic and benthic environment of the harbor of Rhodes, concerning the wood preservation.
4) Underwater excavation, survey and archaeological documentation of the byzantine wreck in the Commercial Harbor of Rhodes, under the direction the archaeologist of the Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities G. B. Koutsouflakis.
5) Conservation of portable artifacts from the byzantine wreck of Rhodes.
6)Archaeological documentation and promotion of portable artifacts from the byzantine wreck of Rhodes.
7) Study, development and implementation of innovative method for the in situ protection of the byzantine wreck of Rhodes.
8) Diffusion of results
