The exhibition opened in 1997 and involves the ancient tragic theatre as an aspect of the identity of the democratic city. The democratic city gave birth to tragedy not only as a literary genre but as an institution commensurate with the other political and judicial institutions of the time. The exhibition also focuses on the architecture of ancient theatres, the role of scene-painting and it also reveals the tragic action through the scripts of ancient tragic poets.
The ancient tragic theatre was also the theme of a mobile exhibition entitled “Theasis”: the democratic city and the tragic theatre”. A museum case contained the appropriate exhibition material, which has been housed at the University of Valetta (Malta) since August 1997.
