"Contemporary Minoans - The Minoan civilization inspires contemporary creators”

In the framework of the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018, the Heraklion Archaeological Museum is organising a thematic cycle of various events under the general title "DAEDALUS". The main objective of this cycle is to highlight innovative techniques in various areas of human activity in antiquity, and to spark a productive dialogue between ancient art and contemporary artistic creation, with the ultimate aim of making modern creators and especially young people, aware of the rich cultural heritage of Crete. The name of the programme is inspired by the emblematic figure of the legendary master-craftsman Daedalus, the epitome of inventiveness and innovation, decisive elements in the flourishing of the arts in the ancient civilisations of Crete and the justified fame of Cretan artisans in antiquity.

The thematic cycle consists of different sections based on professional specialisation connected with the crafts of the mythical Daedalus˙ Pottery, metalworking, miniature art, sculpture, architectural design, stone-working. It includes guided tours in the Museum, educational programmes, exhibitions of modern art, conservation workshops and visits to ancient workshops at archaeological sites. The events will culminate in a temporary archaeological exhibition to be inaugurated in 2019.

The thematic series opens with a one-day meeting on Saturday 12 May, on "The Influence of the Minoan Civilisation on Contemporary Dress and Jewellery", organised in collaboration with the cultural organisation Branding Heritage and the Region of Crete, in order to highlight the influence of Minoan culture in fashion and Jewellery. Renowned Greek creators describe their personal experiences of being inspired by Minoan art, in an open cultural dialogue with representatives of productive and educational bodies. The seminar will be accompanied by an exhibition of contemporary works with clear references to museum exhibits of the Minoan era.
