Conservation of stone objects in the Laboratory of Salamis Archaeological Museum
The 26th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Clasical Antiquities consists of a Conservation Department, which is responsible for the conservation of archaeological objects. The department employs conservators and conservation technicians. For the objects coming from its jurisdiction areas, the Ephorate has conservation Laboratories, based at:
1) The Archaeological Museum of Piraeus
2) The storage area at Elliniko
3) The Archaeological Museum of Salamis
The specialised staff employed, is able to perform conservation works on objects made of ceramic, stone, metal etc., incoming to the laboratories from archaeological excavations (salvatory or not), as current museum objects or parts of monuments.
The conservators of the Ephorate are also responsible for the execution of conservation works - excluding restoration - (surface consolidation, cleaning, etc.) performed on the monuments under the supervision of the Ephorate.
The Ephorate has also recently contributed to special needs of other regional services providing access to specialised conservation equipment and services
During 2009, 30 stone objects have undergone conservation treatment in the Stone Conservation Laboratory at the Archaeological Museum of Salamis. The objects concerned come from the works performed for the sewage network in Salamis (17 objects) as well as current museum objects from the exhibition (13 objects).
