Ancient Harbor of Mandraki Bay, Kythnos
Cooperative research of the Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities with the University of Thessaly
During the underwater archaeological excavation at Mandraki Bay, Kythnos Island, the sunken remains of the island’s ancient port city have been found.
The ancient harbor facilities contribute to the understanding of the shape and morphology of ancient ports. Significant Roman marble sculptures embedded in the harbor facilities and reused as building material has been located and recovered. These sculptures included the trunk of a cuirassier of the first century BC as well as a man’s head dating from the second century BC and three marble columns, one of which appears to fit with the aforementioned head.
Finally, surveying of the port’s submerged building vestiges has been completed so that they can be included in the general topographic plan of the ancient city of Kythnos island.
