Mycenaean Settlement in Korfos-Kalamianos, Corinth
In the area of Korfos- Kalamianos in Corinth, an extended coastal mycenaean settlement has been detected by the American School of Classical Studies, part of which has been submerged.
In the context of the research programme in 2009, an archaeological-geophysical project in the sea room took place, organized by the Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities in collaboration with the Canadian Institute in Greece. The goal of the research was to contribute to the clarification of the ancient coastline, the extension of the settlement, the possible presence of a submerged mycenaean harbor and on the whole to determine the significance and function of the coastal mycenaean settlement of Korfos- Kalamianos.
During the research several rows of beach rock at low depth were detected, with integrated ceramic sherds dated in the 3rd and 2nd millenium B.C. These indicate the boundaries of the coastline of the 3rd and 2nd millenium respectively. Further petrographical analysis will confirm or not the empirical observations, while the geophysical survey of the seabed probably will shed light to the reasons that caused the submergence of the coastline.
[The research took place under the direction of the archaeologist A.G. Simossi, Director of the Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities, co-directors from the canadian side were the geologists J. Boyce and E.G. Reinhardt, Associate Professors at School of Geography and Earth Sciences in the University McMaster (Toronto, Canada) and under the on site supervision of the maritime archaeologist D. Koutsoumba.]
