The Shipwreck of “Mentor”
Research is being conducted regularly since 2009 by the Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities.
The vessel, known to have been carrying the Parthenon marbles in England via Malta, sank at the entrance of the Avlemonas port in southwestern Kythira, in September 1802.
The underwater investigation has revealed the hull of the ship, at a length of about 10 meters. Part of the bow section was found to have been broken, hitting the rocks during the ship’s sinking. The excavation recovered many personal belongings of the crew and passengers, golden pocket watches, rings, golden chains, coins, small ink bottles, as well as buttons from their uniforms and garments. Many interesting objects were also found, like navigational instruments (compasses, a hourglass, a marine divider).
Researches were supported by the Kytherian Association of Australia (Kytherian Research Group), the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and by the Public Benefit Foundation John G. Latsis.
