Temporary Exhibition "Treasures of the Middle Ages"

The Diachronic Museum of Larissa presents the temporary exhibition "Treasures of the Middle Ages". The exhibition, which will run from April 26 to September 30, 2018, presents 445 artefacts, some of the most precious and most representative objects from the collections of the State Archaeological Museum in Warsaw. The exhibition has been already presented in a number of European cities and until recently was on display at the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki.

The exhibits, jewellery and elaborate clothing accessories, date back to the early Middle Ages, especially in the 11th-13th c. They were discovered by archaeological research that took place during the last century in Poland, Belarus and the Ukraine, as well as from private collections of the 19th century.

Rings, temple rings, earrings, bracelets, buckles, pendants, necklaces and crosses, made of glass, copper, silver and gold, most richly decorated, are objects of great artistic and historical significance, testifying to the high level of artistry and the sophisticated taste of their owners.

The exhibition's narrative unfolds through 11 thematic units, emphasizing on the uses, the types, the decorative styles and the manufacturing techniques of jewellery, and indirectly on their artistic, aesthetic, social and symbolic value. The renowned "Borucin hoard" is a separate thematic unit in itself.

The exhibition is organized in collaboration with the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki.
