New International Prize for a Restoration Project in Rhodes

After the restoration of the Hospice of St. Catherine (1997) and religious buildings in the medieval town (2007), an announcement by Europa Nosta on 5 April 2017 confers a prize for the recently finished project of the Restoration-Enhancement of the Bastion of the Grand Master’s Palace in Rhodes.

The massive medieval strongpoint is located to the north of the Palace, across a narrow ditch. Its large-caliber cannon covered the northern part of the town wall and the harbour of Mandraki. In the recent restoration most of the east face of the bastion, partially collapsed, was restored from the foundation up with its covered battery and basements, while the hitherto buried remains of part of the north wing of the Palace were uncovered and enhanced.

Now the great platform of the bastion, 1,550 metres square, has been resurfaced and serves as a venue for large-scale cultural and social events; splendid views towards the northern tip of the island, the Palace and the northern part of the medieval fortifications, provide added appeal for the visitor.
