- Cultural Sponsorship is an initiative, adopted by the Greek state, which aims at attracting private funding in support of culture. Cultural Sponsorship is not related to the subsidies offered by the Ministry of Culture and Sports, which have public funds as their source.
- The Sponsors could be individuals or entities with private legal status, domestic or foreign. Potential sponsors engage with cultural sponsorship in return for the promotion of their social profile.
- The recipients of the sponsorship may be Public Organisations or any Non-for-profit Organisations with an operational focus on culture. This focus needs to be articulated in the organisation’s statute.
- The Sponsorships & Donations Department, which operates under the Directorate of Supervised Institutions, Sponsorships & Donations of the Ministry of Culture, takes initiatives to attract potential sponsors and to promote Cultural Sponsorship. The Department offers support and advice on managing the administrative relationship between the Sponsors and the Recipients of the sponsorships.
As far as the procedure of Cultural Sponsorship is concerned, according to the Law 3525/2007:
- The Agreement between sponsor and sponsorship recipient is submitted to the Department. The Sponsorships & Donations Dpt proposes the issue of a designation deed for a cultural sponsorship Decision, in order for the stated effects of article 12 of the Law 3525/2007 (as amended by Article 11 par. 4 of the Law 3842/2010) to come into force, according to which a cultural discount on the sponsor’s income is foreseen.
The Sponsors can make use of the cultural discount, only in case they have a Greek VAT number. The discount is explained as follows:
The amount of money invested for cultural sponsorship or the value of the in-kind sponsorship - the exact value of the latter is determined by a competent evaluation committee - is reduced from the total taxed income of the individual or the gross income of the Sponsor company, following the provisions of the respective law. The reduced total amount cannot exceed ten percent (10%) of the total taxed income or of the net profit of the Sponsor company which appears in its fiscal records.
