NAUTILUS Navigating Greece 24.01.2014 - 27.04.2014
The exhibition invites you on a sea journey to Greece guided by the nautilus, the ‘mariner’ in ancient Greek, who also shares the name with the small octopus dwelling in a spiral pseudo-shell known as the Mediterranean Argonaut. The exhibition’s seven sections, each dedicated to a concept inherently linked to the marine element, will guide you through the sea routes of the Aegean islands and the ancient Greek cities, from the prehistoric Cyclades, to Minoan Crete and the Mycenaean palaces, to Classical Athens, and, finally, to Pella and the Macedonian cities of the Hellenistic kingdoms. You will also meet contemporary Greek artists, who experience the Greek landscape, converse with antiquity, or comment on social and political reality in their own way. Concepts such as genesis, ecology, mobility, migration, hegemony, οecumene and faith define the stations along a path that stretches from ancient Greek myth to the modern European present. Ancient masterpieces travelling for the first time outside Greece interact with works of contemporary Greek art in an exhibition where Odysseus walks along with Alexander and mythical Odysseys engage with contemporary ones; where photography, painting, sculptural and video installations coexist with Cycladic figurines and rare bronze and marble sculptures; where vase painting, the evidence of coins and inscriptions, but also comic strips and the audio-visual performances invite us to dive into the unique cultural universe of the Mediterranean.
