Pavlopetri Lakonias
Cooperation between the Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities, the British School of Archaeology and the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research.
Pavlopetri is located opposite the island of Elaphonisos, in the Viglafia area of Neapolis Voion. Research started in 1967 by the Ephorate of Peloponnese and the British School.
Research conducted by the Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities has recently been focusing on digitally mapping the site of the settlement and the funerary remains. Building complexes designed in 1968 have also been outlined. The research has revealed and outlined new building complexes in the northern and southern parts of the settlement, covering an area greater than 9,000 m², as well as new burial ensembles and part of a beach rock formation. From a number of sherds that have been recovered and recorded it has been established that the area has been inhabited from the Late Neolithic period and throughout the course of the Bronze Age. Pottery from the Geometric, Classical, Hellenistic and Byzantine periods has also been recovered. Furthermore, an attempt has been made to identify the sites and reconstitute the way and time of the sinking of the area and the ancient coastline.
The Pavlopetri research has completed our knowledge of this important submerged settlement’s extent, unknown so far.
It has been declared an archaeological underwater site under
